First Time Interrailing Europe? Here’s The Best Places To Visit

Interrailing through Europe is, as most who’ve done it will tell you, an adventure of a lifetime. It gives you the opportunity to explore diverse cultures, historic cities, and beautiful landscapes (and is usually quite budget-friendly). Europe has a very well-connected rail network, which makes hopping from one country to another easy and fun. Here’s a guide to some of the best places to visit on your first interrail journey through Europe!

1. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam is very well known for its canals, exciting nightlife, and countless great museums. This city has a very laid-back atmosphere and bike-friendly streets. In fact, the best way to see around the city is cycling!

Amsterdam has more bikes than people (over 800,000 bicycles)!

2. Paris, France

The City of Light is a must-visit if you’d like to visit some iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, and the Notre-Dame Cathedral. Its charming streets and corner cafés are extremely picturesque and romantic

There are 1,665 steps to the top of the Eiffel Tower, but you can take the elevator if you’re not up for the climb!

3. Berlin, Germany

Berlin is a city that blends historical value with a progressive arts and music scene. Visiting the Berlin Wall, Brandenburg Gate, and numerous museums will help you dive deep into the city’s past and present. If you’re a techno music lover, check out the highly exclusive nightclubs as well!

Berlin is home to the world’s longest open-air gallery, the East Side Gallery, featuring murals painted on remnants of the Berlin Wall.

4. Prague, Czech Republic

Prague, with its quirky architecture, historic castles, and charming Old Town, is a city that feels straight out of a Grimms’ fairy-tale. The affordable prices make it a common favourite among budget travellers.

The Prague Astronomical Clock, installed in 1410, is the third-oldest astronomical clock in the world (still in operation today!).

5. Budapest, Hungary

Divided by the Danube River, Budapest has gorgeous views, world-famous thermal baths, and a fun nightlife. For the full experience, you can’t skip the Buda Castle and the Széchenyi Thermal Bath.

Budapest has the oldest metro line in continental Europe, Line 1 of the Budapest Metro, which opened in 1896.

6. Vienna, Austria

Vienna is synonymous with classical music, elegant architecture, and rich history. Visit the Schönbrunn Palace, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and enjoy a slice of Sachertorte at a traditional café.

Vienna’s famous Prater Park is home to one of the world’s oldest amusement parks, and its giant Ferris wheel, the Wiener Riesenrad, has been a city icon since 1897.

7. Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona’s blend of Gothic and modernist architecture, beach culture, and delicious Spanish cuisine makes it an exciting destination. For the architecture enthusiasts, you absolutely have to see Gaudí’s masterpieces, including the Sagrada Família and Park Güell.

Barcelona’s Magic Fountain of Montjuïc has a spectacular display of water, music, and light shows, originally built for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition and kept since then due to its popularity.

8. Rome, Italy

Rome is a living museum, with every street offering glimpses into its ancient past. Visit the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and the Vatican City to immerse yourself in Roman history and culture.

The Colosseum, an ancient amphitheatre, could hold up to 80,000 spectators in its heyday and was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles.

9. Interlaken, Switzerland

If you consider yourself an adventure seeker, Interlaken is the gateway to the Swiss Alps. It’s a hub for outdoor activities like paragliding, skiing, and hiking, surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery.

Interlaken is, as the name suggests, nestled between two lakes, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.

10. Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen is a cool mix of old-school charm and modern vibes, with plenty of green spots and places to hang out by the waterfront. Check out Tivoli Gardens, Nyhavn, and the Little Mermaid statue.
