Albania's Most Underrated Beaches & Coastal Towns

Albania, a Balkan country with a lot to offer, has long been considered an underrated destination. It’s always been somewhat overshadowed by its neighbours (particularly Greece and Italy). However, it also deserves its moment of glory – and a lot of travellers seem to have realised this over the last couple of years, with Albania topping the “top budget destinations” charts.

With a stunning coastline along the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, the country is dotted with lesser-known beaches and coastal towns that offer an even more tranquil, authentic experience than the usual choices of Saranda or Ksamil. Here’s a look at some of Albania’s most underrated locations for your next beach holiday.

1. Himara

Placed right between the mountains and the sea, Himara is a small town with quite a relaxed vibe. Spile Beach, the main beach, is perfect for swimming and sunbathing, while Livadhi Beach, a short drive away, offers more seclusion. The town itself has a charming old quarter with narrow streets, traditional stone houses, and a very laid-back atmosphere.

2. Dhermi

Dhermi is a picture-perfect village perched on a hillside overlooking the Ionian Sea. It’s known for its beautiful, white-pebbled beaches. Dhermi Beach is quite long and wide, which guarantees to give people plenty of space to relax (even in peak season, when it’s packed!). If you’re looking for somewhere quieter, try Drymades Beach, which has some cosy beach bars for refreshments. The village also has a lively nightlife, making it a great spot for both chilling out and having fun.

3. Porto Palermo

Porto Palermo, just south of Himara, is a hidden bay known for its historical importance (history and architecture geeks, check out our guide to the best destinations) and stunning natural beauty. The bay is home to a small beach with calm waters, ideal for a peaceful swim. Overlooking the bay is the well-preserved Porto Palermo Castle, built by Ali Pasha in the early 19th century.

4. Jale

Jale is a small, quiet beach located in a secluded bay – another peaceful area to escape the crowds, if that’s what you’re looking for. The beach is surrounded by lush green hills. There are a few beachside cafes and bars where you can enjoy a cold drink while taking in the views. Jale is also a great spot for camping, with a couple of campsites right by the beach.

5. Borsh

Borsh is one of the longest beaches in Albania, stretching for about 7 kilometers along the Ionian coast. Despite its size, Borsh remains relatively untouched by mass tourism. The beach is backed by olive groves. The village of Borsh, with its traditional stone houses and friendly locals, adds to the charm. It’s a great place to experience the slower pace of life in rural Albania.

Albania’s coastline is full of surprises. With many secluded beaches and coastal towns waiting to be discovered, you can get a different perspective into the country’s culture and landscapes depending on your choice of location. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful retreat, historical sites, or a taste of the local culture, Albania has a bit for everyone. And at an affordable price!
