The N2 Road: Crossing Portugal

If you’re planning a road trip across Portugal, the N2 road (often called Portugal's “Route 66”), is a great option for a diverse and epic journey. From the northern town of Chaves to the sunny Algarve, this 739 km route showcases the country's varied landscapes and cultures perfectly.

The N2 road was built in 1945 to carry people and goods across the length of the country, having since then been an essential part of the Portuguese road system.

It starts out in Chaves, near the Spanish border. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to experience Portuguese mediaeval vibes and thermal springs. This historic town is perfect for a calm stroll, with its ancient Roman bridge and fortresses. As you drive south, the scenery changes quite dramatically. You’ll pass through the rolling hills and vineyards of the Douro Valley, highly famous for its wine. Take a break here to tour a vineyard and sample some of the best port wines in the world!

Further along, the N2 cuts through the heart of Portugal, allowing you to catch glimpses of traditional villages where time truly seems to stand still. The Serra da Estrela mountains, home to the country’s highest peak, provide a gorgeous backdrop and an excellent spot for hiking, cheese tasting, or just taking in the breathtaking views.

In the Alentejo region, the road winds through vast plains dotted with cork oaks and olive groves. Here, the pace of life is also very slow, and we highly recommend you savour some of the local delicacies like hearty stews, freshly baked bread, and rich olive oil. Stop by Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to check out its Roman temple and Gothic cathedral (along with the Chapel of Bones… an undoubtedly unique experience).

As you continue south, the landscape continues to change, with the rolling hills giving way to the golden beaches and quaint towns of the Algarve. The final stretch of the N2 brings you to Faro, where you can unwind on the sun-drenched coast. The Algarve is an incredibly popular destination for tourists and locals alike, with its great nightlife and brilliant beaches. Don’t miss the chance to try some water sports or (if you’re a foodie like us!) explore some markets and seafood restaurants.

Travelling down the N2 is more than just a drive; it’s a fantastic way to have a true Portuguese experience, from traditional towns and scenic vineyards to mountain ranges and beachside paradises. So, grab your friends, load up on snacks, press “play” on your road trip playlist, and hit the road!
